Nicknamed “the Mother Road” by John Steinbeck in The Grapes of Wrath, Route 66 is filled with history, nostalgia, and quirky roadside attractions. An artery of transportation, an agent of social transformation, and a remnant of America’s past, Route 66 was built in 1926. By the late 1930s, it wound its way from the shores of Lake Michigan, across the rolling hills of the Missouri Ozarks, through the open plains of Oklahoma, to the open ranch lands of Texas, over the enchanted mesas of New Mexico, to the Mojave Desert. It finally ended in the “land of milk and honey” on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
